As of the 30th April 2016 the regulated mobile roaming surcharge rates were reduced in the EU (the 28 member states + Iceland, Liechtenstein & Norway). The EU has been reducing the rates over recent years with the surcharge rates due to be cut to ZERO on 15th June 2017, meaning users will be charged their home tariff wherever they are in the EU.

The new surcharges are:

  • Data – €0.05 per MB
  • Texts – €0.02 per SMS
  • Incoming Calls – €0.01 per min
  • Outgoing Calls – €0.05 per min

This change is potentially good news for businesses that have employees travelling and working within the EU. However, the mobile networks all have various roaming solutions to tempt businesses to opt out of the standard charging and apply “bolt-ons” and various tariffs offering potential cost savings, if businesses are:

  1. Aware of their employees usage
  2. Able to optimise the various tariffs and bolt-ons

No easy task given the multitude of options which the networks are constantly reviewing and amending.

This is where ERA can help you to reduce your company’s roaming spend, with in-depth knowledge of the mobile industry and the ability to accurately profile your mobile spend (at home and abroad). ERA can monitor the usage and make recommendations not just before you enter into a contract as part of a full market review but during the contract term, providing you with regular audit reports optimising the value for money for the life of the contract.
