A recent article published by the British Institute of Facilities Management described the FM sector as a barometer of the economy. The FM sector employs around 10% of the UK’s working population and is estimated to be worth £111 billion a year to the economy, which is why it’s a barometer of business performance as a whole.

The BIFM’s business confidence monitor last month released figures that 64% of UK professionals from the sector describe the business environment as ‘positive’ or ‘very positive’. The FM Business Confidence Monitor 2016 research was created from a survey of professionals from senior decision-makers to teams on the ground delivering services.

However, the impact of the National Minimum Wage (NMW) and the imminent apprenticeship levy present challenges to the Facilities Management sector in terms of profitability.
